How important is the sale of merchandise as a means of income for WWE?

They say part of the reason John Cena needs to remain in the limelight is because his purple/orange t-shirts sell very well. He is 'marketable', just like The Rock and Stone Cold were and that was part of the reason why the were continually featured in the main event of WM.
